Alghero was originally a Genovese hamlet, which was then colonised by the Catalans around the second half of the 14th century who named it “Barceloneta”, the little Barcelona. They built fortifications that are still standing today marking a strong Catalan influence in the town’s architecture, folklore and language. Alghero is favourably positioned within an ample gulf and the port. Its coastline is rich with little coves, inlets and pinewood, high cliffs and jagged rocks washed by the crystalline waters with many variations of blue and green. The climate is perfect for the vineyards that produce wines famous the world over. Not far from Alghero is the famous Neptune Grotto within the natural marine reserve of Capo Caccia.Alghero is also home to numerous events throughout the year, including shows, folk festivals and exhibitions, night bars and clubs.
